St. Louis Medicare Fraud Lawyers
Dixon Injury Firm’s Medicare Fraud Attorneys Help St. Louis Whistleblowers Win Cases
Providing Americans with quality, affordable health care has been perhaps our government’s biggest challenge in recent years. That is why it is so disgusting to see health care providers rip off the government. These providers have the trust of their patients and their government, and yet they use that trust to line their own pockets, thereby making health care more expensive for everyone.
Dixon offers a broad range of legal services. This includes personal injury, workers compensation, product liability, and other claims. Our St. Louis Medicare fraud lawyers bring quality legal counsel to clients and their families.

First, What is Medicare Fraud?
Medicare is a federal health insurance program that is available to anyone over 65 and younger people that are disabled or facing certain terminal illnesses. Medicare has several “parts,” including Part A, which covers hospital and nursing home stays; Part B, which covers doctors’ services, medical supplies, and the like; and Part D, which covers prescription drugs. Because of the sprawling nature of this system, Medicare is paying thousands of health care providers across the country, and it is impossible to police them all.
It can be relatively easy for scammers to set up a false Medicare service provider and start billing for fake services. The government simply does not have the ability to track down every scammer. A worse offense is actual health care providers that simply tack on a few unnecessary services to a real doctor’s visit. That type of fraud is much harder to stop. The government has set up a reward system where the public can file complaints of Medicare fraud and then receive a portion of any money recovered.

What to Watch Out For
The Department of Justice provides a steady stream of press releases touting their success in combating fraud, and this can tell the public exactly what types of scams to be watching out for. For example, in December 2017 a Dallas hospital was forced to pay $7.5 million to settle allegations that it was paying kickbacks to doctors for surgical referrals. The hospital allegedly agreed to pay for advertising for the doctors, and in exchange the doctors would refer their patients to the hospital for treatment. These types of kickbacks are illegal, and the illegal activity was brought to light by two whistleblowers that used to work at the hospital. For their contribution, which was a huge benefit to the government and the public, these two individuals split an award of $1,125,000.
That case is not unique. Just a few days before, the DOJ announced that a heart doctor in Florida had agreed to pay $1.95 million for ordering unnecessary ultrasounds. The DOJ said that he falsified patients records in order to make the tests seem necessary even though he knew they were not, and then he charged Medicare for them. This was brought to light by a former employee that blew the whistle on him, and for her troubles she was awarded $350,000. In July 2017, Medicare fraud hit closer to home when a care management company in St. Louis paid $8.3 million to resolve claims that they unnecessarily billed Medicare for physical, speech, and occupational therapy treatment for nursing home patients that did not need them.
